Getting the balance in a vegetarian diet

I've been a vegetarian for 30 years, and I've slowly been putting on the pounds. When I stop and think, I realise that it's because so much of the diet is carb based - pasta, rice, potatoes, bread.

How can I get some protein in the diet, and less carbs - I really dont like the taste of meat substitutes, but I do need to get a bit more protein and less reliance on the carbs.

Any ideas would be welcome.
